The electrification of the automobile is progressing fast and is changing the architecture of future vehicles tremendously. This trend is a result of the need for higher vehicle efficiency and the desire to diversify the energy sources used for transportation. The Chevrolet Volt and the Opel Ampera are part of a wide portfolio of GM solutions for vehicle electrification to meet the expectations of customers, are electric vehicles with extended range. They operate as an electric vehicle as long as there is useful energy in the battery. However, unlike a battery electric vehicle they do not suffer from lost vehicle utility when the battery is depleted. Volt and Ampera can continue operation by using an internal combustion engine, and for this reason they are classified as Extended Range Electrical Vehicles (EREV). A specialized EREV powertrain, called the "Voltec" introduces a unique two-motor transaxle utilizing multiple operating modes that are more efficient than conventional transaxles for battery-electric vehicles. This allows for increased driving range in electric drive mode and lower fuel consumption in the charge-sustaining mode. The1,4 l internal combustion gasoline engine is an enabler to extend the operating range of the vehicle with a clear customer benefit of an EV without range limitations. Finally, the T-shape 16-kWh lithium-ion battery containing 288 prismatic cells and using liquid-based thermal management represents a key system to enable the full performances of the Voltec propulsion system. Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera are full capable electric vehicles delivering zero emissions for normal daily driving. They are also able to make longer trips on weekends, holidays and in emergencies. Volt and Ampera have the ability to be only vehicle in a household to fulfill all personal transportation needs.
