DC charging is considered to be an essential completion to AC charging for comprehensive use of electric vehicles enabling quick range extension and long haul routes. It represents an important base for future intense penetration of electromobility as it constitutes an optimum economic solution. German and US-American car manufacturers have developed the combined (combo) charging system in an joint approach enabling AC and DC charging with only one car inlet and using PLC (Power Line Communication) as common communication technology for both advanced AC and DC charging. In Europe the existing type 2 connector for AC charging can be as well used for DC charging with up to 30 kW and the newly designed Combo 2 connector offers charging power up to 80 kW with 400 V system voltage and even enables doubling of voltage eventually reaching an ultimate charging power of 200 kW.
