Increasing information content for automotive drivers as well as multimedia applications for passengers is driving the penetration rate of displays in vehicles although space for such displays is limited. Head-up displays (HUD) in cars became available with the introduction of LED technology, however, due to limited luminance of LEDs with the drawback of rather large space requirements. A possible solution to further miniaturize HUD-displays is the usage of higher luminance light sources, and with the availability of blue and recently green solid state lasers without the need for frequency conversion now full color laser systems are possible. The presentation will cover the properties of laser based projection systems by discussing key components like efficient solid state lasers and micro-mirror devices which are closely linked via intelligent electronic controls. Advantages in possible applications like head-up displays or rear projection in instrument clusters or centre consoles will be deduced. Special requirements for automotive environments need to be addressed on system level to generate reliable solutions. Based on the presented technology status the presentation will close with an outlook, especially, with regard to markets beyond automotive applications.
