So called Blind-Spot systems have been on the market for passenger cars since the beginning of 2006. Even though, only one of the heavy duty vehicle manufacturers offers a very limited functionality today. This paper investigates the use of blind spot, or Adjacent Lane Detection, systems on heavy vehicles. The length of heavy vehicles coupled with the possibility of very high relative velocities, puts a lot of stress on the sensors used. The range need to be significantly longer than in the case of passenger cars. Also, since there are large areas where the driver of the heavy vehicle is unable to spot other vehicles, the detection areas also need to be a lot different than the one used around passenger cars. The paper motivates the function using accident statistics and continues on to discuss sensor coverage issues. Furthermore discussions around sensor fusion and data association aspects are presented. A suggested architecture along with remarks around HMI issues concludes the paper. Since the presented function will actively control the vehicle using steering and braking, its implications on vehicle dynamics and these actuators are also an important part of the discussions in the publication.
