Much has already been publicized about the Rechargeable Energy Storage System or RESS that is utilized by the Chevy Volt and now the Opel Ampera. This T-shaped Lithium ion battery system is capable of propelling the Ampera on battery-supplied electric power for up to 64 kilometers. It comprises 288 separate battery cells, weighs approximately 190 kilograms and is capable of supplying over 16 kWh of energy. An overview of various polymers is discussed with a more detailed focus on several of the larger usage applications including the thermoplastic repeating frames and interconnect boards and the RESS thermoset cover.
