The following directions of studies of low-frequency forced brake vibration seem to be the most topical and promising for practice: the modeling of the origination of FTV (Friction Torque Variation) with account for the wear and thermoelasticity processes, the interrelation between forced vibration and frictional self-oscillations or groan, the nonuniformity of transfer films, the processes of thermoelastic instability and their relation to wrapping, the vibration modes of the suspension during braking, the relation of the FTV with the simultaneous changes in the geometry (DTV, runout, and equivalent radius) and frictional characteristics, the calculation of the value and order of the FTV for the assigned design parameters and braking conditions, and the development of models for calculating the value of vibration in an automobile at the assigned value of the FTV. The available experimental methods make it possible to obtain adequate design and materials science solutions to reduce vibration and noise in brake systems of mobile vehicles. However, the experimental methods are time-consuming and laborious and the corresponding costs of vibroacoustic tests exceed greatly the costs of the standard life and driving tests of frictional materials and articles. On the other hand, it is difficult to develop theoretical approaches to the optimization of composite frictional materials by the forced vibroactivity criterion because of the lack of a universal method for selecting the composition. The composition should provide a compromise among all material characteristics or at least the possibility of varying one of them while keeping the others, in particular the frictional ones, unchanged. In this connection, the search for cardinally new methods for varying the structure and properties of composite materials is topical.
