The paper reviews theoretical research into vibroacoustic phenomena in transport brake systems. The mechanisms of occurrence of different types of noise and vibration in brakes are described. Analytical, numerical, and experiment-calculated methods for studying brake noise are discussed and their disadvantages from the point of view of obtaining adequate calculation models are analyzed. The results of prediction of the vibroacoustic activity of friction units based on calculation methods are considered. The importance of establishing a theoretical basis for prediction of the vibroacoustic behavior of brake systems is caused by the high costs and limited possibilities of optimization of friction units by experimental methods. Adequate numerical solutions of prediction and minimization of brake noise problems can be obtained from the following procedures: 1. Application of a systematic approach to the problem under study; 2. use of adequate methods for solving the specified problem (heat vibration, groan, moan, squeal, etc.); 3. correct interpretation of test and simulation results. Computer simulation models based on numerical methods possess a number of evident advantages; however, the solution accuracy achieved and the reliability of prediction are rather limited, primarily due to the numerous assumptions and simplifications used in the models. The main problem in the simulations is that they do not fully address the tribological aspects of the vibroacoustic phenomena in the friction contact.
