The continuous requirement for refinement and improvements in the efficiency of automotive transmissions has been driving research into materials technology. Plastics and composites are widely used in automotive transmissions but very rarely do they replace steel as a material for torque transmission gearing. Drive System Design (DSD) has created a case study to determine some of the potential applications for polymer gears in automotive transmissions. This has required research into some of the latest advances in materials technology and manufacturing processes. There are some obvious drawbacks with regards to material strength but, at a high level, there are potential advantages over steel with regard to NVH performance and weight reduction. Experimental data for PEEK gears explores the motivation for the use of polymers in passenger car transmissions. Potential for increased efficiency and reductions in operating noise levels compared to metal gears is investigated. The study reviews the current availability of methods for rating gears for durability. It also aims to understand the requirement for further extensive testing on polymers in order to determine the potential specifically as a gear material. The focus of the investigation is to provide recommendations for the design of gears and transmission configurations to exploit the material properties of appropriate plastics and composites. Furthermore it suggests specific applications for plastic gears in automotive transmissions.
