CO2-reduction and thus the decrease of fuel consumption is a major goal in the development of future powertrains. Down-sizing is a well-known method, which is already used in the lower vehicle classes, but with respect to comfort and NVH leads to increased challenges. Daimler has been the first to market with a modern four cylinder diesel engine in the upper S-class segment and received the World Green Car award in 2012. On the other hand the characteristic of the combustion engine has been dominated the noise and the sound of passenger cars for a long time. Electric motors are getting more powerful and thus not only attending but also substituting the combustion engine combined with the perception of new acoustic phenomena such as whining. But not only the acoustics of the electric powertrain is evident for passenger cars. Missing the covering sound of the combustion engine, electric powered units for power steering, brake booster, air conditioning, etc. are getting more and more relevant. The sound differs dependant an the operating conditions and the acoustic behaviour is different from the cars we use today. The technical challenges are numerous and complex: what noise level is acceptable and which sound is expected from passengers in the car and pedestrians in the street? The balanced optimum is the target and the experience from the current electric cars A-Class, smart, Vito and B-Class FuelCell is the basis for the acoustics of the next vehicle generation: Mercedes-Benz BlueZero - the modular concept in e-mobility. Beside the different acoustics the vibrational comfort will also be increased. Different start/stop systems are compared and their effects at the passenger seats are shown. For Daimler's NVH-engineers the target for every kind of future powertrains, from down-sized combustion engines to fuel-cell systems, is the same: quiet, comfortable, characteristic and with a powerful feedback.
