The introduction of hybridized drivetrains in passenger cars has resulted in diverse concepts for the various vehicles. At ZF we are pursuing the parallel hybrid concept with an electric motor integrated in the powertrain. Compared to classical powertrains, this configuration offers the potential of influencing the vibration characteristics of the powertrain with help of the electric motor. The possibilities to specific damping of undesired vibrations were examined within the scope of the development of the new 8-gear automatic transmission. This paper presents the diverse vibration phenomena of the powertrain and explains the possibilities of active influence by introducing damping torques with the electric motor. In terms of comfort behavior, we focus primarily on vibrations during start-up of the vehicle (caused by steep torque gradients), as well as on reducing the impact of torsional vibrations of the combustion engine. Particularly at idle mode the charging operations for the traction battery are critical states for vibration which require new solution approaches. The adaptive notch method presented here is a technological control mode which achieves excellent results with small requirements on the performance of the microcontroller unit. The method known from telecommunications employs a LMS (Least Mean Square) algorithm for the adaptive tracking of the filter and model parameters, and is therefore robust with regard to changes of parameters in the control loop. The measured results illustrate the effectiveness of active vibration damping and clarify the potential of these measures as an appropriate supplement for conventional passive damping systems.
