Fuel cell vehicles are ready for the market in terms of performance and functionality (power, weight, package, freeze start, NVH) as well as durability. The cost reduction pathway will lead to fuel cell vehicles in a few years which are competitive with comparable conventional vehicles (Diesel hybrids) assuming similar volumes. The production and distribution of hydrogen relies on wellestablished technologies and can be clearly cost-competitive with current fuel costs. The required investment is significant but by no means unsurmountable. Joint efforts by all stakeholders including governments are required, however, to establish the necessary fueling network. The current status of fuel cell vehicles shows that the technology is ready for the market in terms of performance, functionality, durability and maturity. The approach for cost reduction will make fuel cell vehicles affordable for both car makers and customers. Car makers are committed to a vehicle rollout, beginning with commercially available vehicles in the 2015 timeframe. The build-up of the necessary hydrogen infrastructure is technically and commercially feasible. It requires, however, the joint efforts of all stakeholders: Auto companies to define markets and vehicle volumes, Oil and industrial gas companies to invest in production and distribution, Retailers to invest and operate hydrogen pumps, mostly at existing fuel stations, Government to establish the necessary regulatory framework and provide initial incentives for both vehicles and infrastructure. From all the above, it is evident that no miracles are required to make hydrogen fuel cell vehicles a realistic and necessary transportation technology in the near future.
