Corrosion and material failure can lead to hydrocarbon release and associated health, safety and environment possible consequences, in addition to the economic consequence. Effort to mitigate the risk can be done during operation through accurate and regular equipment inspection and maintenance. But also, mitigation solution can be achieved during the design phase, which is in the material selection task. Any cost impact due to corrosion or material failure during operation can be compared to cost of equipment with an upgrading material grade It does not exclude nevertheless, that for equivalent technical solutions, means equivalent materials resistance, the best economical solution is considered. The global cost includes the cost of the raw material and the final cost of the equipment. The last one takes into account particular precautions during material supply, fabrication and welding. The opportunities for innovative substitution to achieve equivalent performance at lower cost are one of challenges of the material-corrosion engineer at Technip. Technip activities include upstream oil and gas, onshore, offshore and subsea, and downstream with LNG plant, refinery, petrochemicals and also other industrial plants, for chemicals and mines. This paper is focused on oil and gas upstream plant for onshore and offshore. Duplex stainless steel is largely used on subsea, for the carcass of the flexible pipe, for the tubes of the umbilical and also the subsea structure where super duplex grades are required. These applications are not developed in this paper. The applications of duplex stainless steels in refinery are multiple and already well-explained during a previous Duplex World conference. This paper highlights the main corrosion and failure mechanisms of duplex materials, their use in oil and gas and their limitations. There are still considered as new alloys potentially to replace austenitic stainless steel. Their use remains low and this paper tries to extrapolate the possible future applications.
