DP is used to optimise the energy management algorithm for a hybrid electric power train for the tracked vehicle. We first design a rule-based control strategy based on the power coverage concept. Then we formulated a DP (Dynamic Programming) problem and solved it to find the optimal control. Through application of optimal control as the battery cell number varies, the battery sizing is optimised. Control rules are extracted to form an updated control strategy. The improved control strategy is validated by simulations. The fuel economy of the improved control strategy is about 16.1% less than the original rule-based control strategy. It is found that the voltage of the battery should match the optimal operating range of the engine and generator so a DC/DC converter between them is worthy of further investigation. It should be noted that DP can be used to find optimal control solutions only under a specific system configuration, but it also give clues to how to tune the key parameters of the power train configuration and test them efficiently under the optimal control implemented by DP. It should also be noted that although the real driving cycle is stochastic, the robustness of the DP-based control algorithm will be achieved when a huge amount of cycles is considered in the design. Such a method and process can be instructive to other complex power train configuration design and optimisation.
