Seam welded and non welded seamless super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) tubes were produced and evaluated on the technical scale in aggressive chloride containing media typical of the oil and gas. The localised corrosion resistance of the welded and non welded SDSS was investigated by means of ASTM G48A in FeCl3 solutions at 50 °C. Further experimental studies have been conducted using slow strain test technique (SSRT) to Investigate the effect of low levels of sigma (<2%) in SDSS on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behaviour in North Sea production brine. Results have shown that both welded and non welded super duplex stainless steelhas shown weight loss less than 0.2g/m2. SCC results indicate that low levels of sigma have no effect on SCC resistance of SDSS material in sour gas environment. Both welded and non welded microstructures have consistently shown good corrosion resistance for conditions studied. Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) technique was used to assess the microstructures and to evaluate the effect of sigma on the corrosion failure process. Ferrite grain boundaries are susceptible to localised attack in the presence of sigma.
