Since 01.01.2012 railcars/locomotives have to comply with the limits of 2.0/4.0 g/kWh for nitrogen oxides and 0.025g/kW PM according to the regulations 97/68/EC - 2010/26/EC. Fulfilling these and future standards as well as increasing requirements regarding reliability and efficiency for rail vehicles demand diesel engines that are especially developed for rail applications. Focussing on high reliability, the engine layout, design and calibration has to follow the knowledge of vehicle integration and the experience of real load profiles in different rail applications. In addition to this, customer requirements come to the fore. Minimal fuel consumption, minimal noise emissions and sometimes the wish not to have additional reagents such as urea water dilution are partly conflictive to legislative demands. Taking these requirements into account, Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG contracted a cooperation with MAN Truck and Bus AG regarding the development of diesel engines for rail vehicles. The main focuses are rail specific requirements such as the corresponding emission regulations and the optimal engin design for the whole powertrain of new and existing vehicles. At the same time, this step prevents a bottleneck in the availability of appropiate diesel engines for Voith powerpacks and locomotives. The first Voith diesel engine for rail applications, a 16 liter V8 with 500 kW power output, is developed on the basis of a new MAN V-engine series. The base engine was only moderately modified, whereas the peripheral components were completely rearranged and the combustion calibrated. In respect of the emission limits, the new Voith-V8 uses two-stage turbocharging, high pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and one particle oxidation catalyst (POC) per bank. In terms of the engine design, it was a special challenge to adjust to the requirements and boundary conditions in rail vehicles. The V8-engine is suitable for a component-based integration as well as for powerpack solutions in underfloor or roof positioning. Also, aspects with regards to the re-motorisation of existing stage IIIB-engines were considered. Besides the V8, Voith is also developing a horizontal 6-cylinder inline diesel engine. This concept with 12.8 liter displacement leads to power outputs of up to 390 kW and complies with the stage IIIB limits by using a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. In addition to diesel engines, Voith has also developed a waste heat recovery (WHR) system. The first Voith steamtrac expander has a maximum power output of 40 kW by using exhaust gas heat of combustion engines. Future Voith powertrain solutions will combine these two technologies. The combination of very efficient diesel engines with the Voith WHR-system will lead to break specific fuel consumptions (BSFC) lower than 180 g/kWh in best points.
