The electrification of the powertrain is becoming increasingly important due to its potential for reducing CO2, the possibility of emission-free driving and its guarantee of sustainable mobility. With the BMW ActiveE, the BMW Group is taking the next logical step in its research and development activities an electric mobility. In comparison to the MINI E, the drive components have been completely redesigned with the requirements of the Megacity vehicle in mind and they allow improved integration into the vehicle with four seats, a luggage compartment with about 200 litres and excellent functional characteristics. The vehicle is powered by a electric synchronous motor with 125 kW power and a maximum torque of 250 Nm. This hybrid synchronous machine has been completely developed by BMW and is characterised by its very high efficiency, optimal power performance and compact design. The engine is integrated in the rear axle and fills the space of the rear axle differential. The powertrain is actuated by a newly developed power electronics which has been optimised in terms of function and overall size. It allows Optimum interaction between all electric components ensuring a dynamic, energy-efficient and safe operation. The electric powertrain gets its energy from a modular high-voltage storage System with lithium-ion batteries, enabling a range of approximately 240 kilometres (160 miles) in the FTP72 American drive cycle. With the new development and the extensive in-house production of the key components for the ActiveE, BMW has laid the foundations for the creation of further exciting powertrains in the future. These powertrains are characterised by their dynamic power performance, high efficiency, smooth running and optimised quality - even when electricity is used instead of conventional fuel to be transformed into motive power.
