Since the year 1997 Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) ratings for adult occupant protection, child protection and pedestrian protection are used to give consumers an internationally recognised indicator about the safety of new cars. With these three items and the associated test procedures and criteria Euro NCAP has concentrated on crash safety, namely to mitigate the consequences in front and side impacts as well as in pedestrian impacts. Primary or active vehicle safety did not play a role at the beginning but in the last years the focus of Euro NCAP broadened in order to give attention to the overall safety of new vehicles. As a result some active safety features entered the rating scheme and at present intensive work is going on to include further promising active safety measures. With the future introduction of the assessment of forward looking or predictive braking systems which are expected to have an essential benefit for road safety, this situation will change. The paper describes the development of rating active safety features in Euro NCAP looking at past approaches. The main focus is put on ongoing and future activities to broaden the scope of Euro NCAP with regard to active safety. Here especially the work of several research projects and working groups, which elaborate and harmonise possible testing methods that can be taken by Euro NCAP, is considered.
