Reduction of the curb weight of commercial vehicles is one of the drivers to increase transport efficiency; and to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The chassis is a major contributing component to the weight and consequently an obvious component to optimize. A complication is caused by the flexibility of the chassis which gives rise to complex dynamic behavior. There is a high sensitivity of dynamic loads of the chassis itself and components attached to chassis parameters. An overview is presented how different design proposals are evaluated. The approach is focused an dynamic analyses in the frequency domain allowing fast and efficient parameter studies and optimizations. System synthesis techniques are deployed in sensitivity studies of the frame design to find the optimum solutions for a wide range of vehicles. Optimizing the frame design to meet all strength and stiffness requirements at the lowest weight is a complex problem that could easily exceed all practical computer resources and time. The large variability caused by the many layout configurations and user conditions requires robust design concepts. The frequency domain approach represents a fast and flexible way to perform many evaluations under varying driving conditions. It affords insight into the underlying dynamics and provides directions to optimize the frame design. System synthesis is a powerful method to perform sensitivity analysis and optimization. It is ideal for evaluating tuning parameters such as bushing stiffness, frame stiffness, damping, etc.
