The engineering service company GIF is currently developing a dual clutch transmission for a large non-European automotive customer. A broad development process is employed to address all aspects of the total development responsibility. This report describes the processes and methods used in the combined development criteria's as well as the important role of the function of the interface for transmission hardware and software integration. The quality of these processes and methods are essential for the alignment of the individual engineering disciplines and also for durability, reliability and robustness of the new DCT under consideration of the requirements for mass production in China. An interesting challenge in the design of the presented DCT was the necessity to develop a transmission, which is built very short in length in relation to the competition. The vehicle package requires an overall length of less than 350 mm between engine flange level and vehicle fixed framework. To accommodate this requirement, in a first step extensive concept analysis using modern development and simulation tools is necessary. At the beginning of the concept identification, first raw length specifications for individual components and further measures to reduce the total length are defined. Referring to different gear set configurations, finally different transmission architectures are compiled and analyzed within an evaluation matrix. For the comprehensive evaluation of the concept, further PDS-based criteria and requirements, besides the overall length, are integrated into the matrix. Using the live up of further iteration steps with consolidating input parameters, finally a sustainable transmission concept for further detailing can be presented, which already specifies the substantial parameters of transmission architecture and the axle basis.
