In recent years, due to the influences of greenhouse effect and fossil energy shortage, the concept of carbon reduction and energy saving has been valued highly. Therefore, the market of the internal combustion engine vehicles will be impacted seriously for the increased fossil fuel price. Moreover, to consider the possible change of the way of traffic and the habit of the driver in the future, light electric vehicles (LEVs) with high energy conversion efficiency and low emissions are believed to be the best choice of transportation in the future. The object of this study is to develop a modularized LEV technology to promote the competitive ability of the future's LEVs. The main features of the developed LEV are in-wheel motors using six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors and a high efficiency battery management system (BMS) with both high energy density and high power density batteries. Furthermore, the dynamic model is been established and the acceptable performance of the proposed modularized LEV is also shown by some simulated results. In addition, the mother-board concept from the personal computer (PC) is adopted in the development of the modularized LEV. The developed modularized LEV has no mechanical differential and transmission, and all the modules of LEV are connected to the mother-board type electrical control unit (ECU) module via controller area network (CAN) Bus. Thus, the users can design, modify, or repair the LEV according to their requirements and preferences easily and conveniently.
