This paper demonstrates that the triangle method can be confidently used to evaluate a vehicles' kinetic energy loss in a road traffic accident. Its performance was evaluated in terms of two different aspects: the effectiveness and the efficiency of the method. The validations of the effectiveness and accuracy of the method were performed by comparing the results with EES (equivalent energy speed) values determined in experimental crash tests and numerical simulations. The good outcome of this comparison demonstrates the ability of the method to calculate correctly the energy loss values. It has been shown that when the data available concerning the A and B stiffness coefficients of the reference car are not completely representative of the situation under examination, the triangle method yields better results than the classic method of comparison of EES values or CRASH3-like methods. The efficiency of the method was proven by a sensitivity analysis of the results to errors in the input data. The analysis of the sensitivity indicates that in order to minimize the final error on the vehicle's EES value, it is advisable to utilize a severe damage extent as the reference damage, in order to minimize the error on the vehicle's stiffness, and to be especially careful in estimating the depth of the damage, both for the reference vehicle and for the one under study, since it is the most influential factor in the computation.
