Environmental issues caused by global warming, limited resources as well as future binding CO2 targets are pushing for low carbon technology. In this respect electrification and hybridisation has gained impressive momentum and will become a leading technology for future road vehicles. A significant market share of up to 10% of the total vehicle market is expected within 10 years time. GKN is producing transmissions for E-Motor assist AWD systems since 2002 in high volume and starts production of an eDrive module for an European Hybrid AWD vehicle soon. Furthermore GKN has recently been awarded the transmission for a PHEV (EV with Range Extender) and various EV vehicles. Beside this we are working on a large number of transmission applications for EV and HEV vehicles. Technology for EV & HEV transmission is based on conventional manual/automatic transmissions and geared components for AWD-systems, but has to be extended and adapted to meet the needs of electric drive systems. Major development challenges like e-motor/gearbox interface, e- motor integration, high input speed, high efficiency and park lock or disconnect features will be presented in this paper. GKN is producing gear components and coupling technology for AWD systems since many years and is therefore well positioned to cope with the technological challenges of transmission for hybrid and electric vehicles. The paper will describe in more details a newly developed eDrive transmission with disconnect feature for a hybrid AWD system. This concept combines hybrid, EV and AWD functions in a beneficial way. To be able to support a maximum on application programs the different requirements in terms of power, torque and features have been aligned with few groups of gear box designs called families. This "family-approach" allows quick response to prototype requests and limits the required development effort. GKN is working closely with various E-Motor and electronic system suppliers to be able to provide eDrive system solutions, optimized and tailored for the specific customer needs.
