Nonwovens are already used in automotive applications but there is still a great potential. Reasons are for example minimum mileage regulations with the need for lightweight materials or more ecological raw materials. Nonwovens offer many standalone properties that make them interesting for automotive industry. Most important are the possibilities of lightweight and low cost reached by the application of nonwovens. An aesthetic look and low VOC combined with sound absorbing properties are very attracting for automotive designers. One important field are automotive floor carpets made from nonwovens instead from tufted because they are produced with lower cost. Another application of nonwovens is in vehicle underbodies. Nonwovens offer moldability combined with hydrophobicity and oleophobicity with less space requirements than foams and without any finishing treatment. The market growth of automotive industry offers nonwovens companies economic possibilities. Needlepunch nonwovens manufacturer Foss Manufacturing reports increasing sales in the automotive sector from 17 % in 2011 and probably another 15 % in 2012. The nonwovens manufacturer Texel has increased automotive business with its Thermofit product that has good acoustical properties and can be tailored for customer specifications. Environmental responsibility is a good argument for using nonwovens and will help to increase their application in cars. To reach that goal nonwovens companies have not only to develop innovations but to establish partnerships with customers and potential buyers to match their needs and requirements. Another measure is fostering the cooperation with research institutions and universities.
Drive on with nonwovens. Technology advances and changing customer needs open new pathways for nonwovens in the automotives industry
