The interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are widely used in the modern electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid EV. For the interior PMSM, there are two different control strategies, namely, the field oriented control (FOC) and the direct torque control (DTC). Based on a 15-kW interior PMSM used in a hybrid EV, this paper compares these two control strategies and proposes an improved voltage vector selection strategy for the DTC. Experimental results show the novel voltage vector selection strategy can decrease current ripple and fix the switching frequency.
