Japanese bullet train - Shinkansen - system gains today an extremely high evaluation as a safe transportation system. One of the gears that support the high safety of Shinkansen system is the axle which has high safety and reliability. The axles are designed under the high safety factor counting on a sufficient margin, manufactured under thorough quality control, and inspected regularly in service. Sufficient compressive residual stress and substantially high safety factor keep failure of axles away. In addition, due to the over-hanging press-fitting of the inner-end of wheel boss, low in-service stress, and regular magnetic particle testing, it has become rare that fretting fatigue cracks are initiated at the wheelseat. In this paper, the current situation on the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of the Shinkansen vehicle axles as well as the results of fatigue tests using full-scale axles and the result of evaluation for fatigue crack propagation are described. Besides, we discuss the accuracy of ultrasonic testing.
