In this study the thermo-mechanical processes evolving m the course of interaction of the wheel and the brake blocks in railway brake operation are dealt with. Former microscopy investigations pointed out that under block brake operation conditions crystal-structure transformations can take place on the running surface and in the layers close to the wheel tread. In the case of certain types of railway carriages martensite formation has been experienced on the running tread of the wheel-rows. Radial cracks can start at a high probability from the martensitic loci of the wheel tread. It has been pointed out based on the finite element analysis of the wheel/brake-block interaction and further facts concerning the contact localization that due to the frequent stop brakings the temperature peaks in the wheel periphery and in a thin layer under the wheel tread can eventually achieve the temperature limit necessary for martensite formation, and in the case of the presence of appropriate high cooling velocities (cold rail) martensite formation can occur. The finite element analysis is apt also for understanding the thermo-elastic processes evolving in the braked wheel by simulating the rolling and sliding motion of the wheel along the rail. The knowledge of the wheel/rail contact process gives the basis of the investigations into the wheel flattening formation and other types of damages to wheel treads.
