Based on global brand identity, unification of Human Machine Interface (HMI) concepts in the automotive sector plays an important role in the development of future products. To understand the scope of the HMI globalization or the need for regional adaptations an investigation with 90 participants from China, North America and Europe has been carried out. Different display aspects like color, shape, gloss, labels and information density were tested with the help of five different flash animations. The results show that for color and item labels a global HMI solution can be found. In contrast, for shape, gloss and information density cultural differences do exist. One outcome of the study is that a "Global HMI Requirements Engineering Process" makes sense. Moreover, the study gives a direction of how a global HMI concept can be aligned with local customer requirements from different markets to optimize customer satisfaction.
