Aluminium alloy overcoats of pistons in combustion engines were laser-textured under laboratory conditions to produce oil microcontainers on their surface. Parameters of the laser processing (radiation time, power density, geometrical arrangement) were optimized on aluminium samples used for making the engine pistons. Topography of the piston surface, its hardness and microstructure were studied after usual mechanical processing and after laser texturing. Pulse laser ablative micromachining resulted in formation of oil micro trays on the coat and the hub of the pistons. The laser beam with power density of 0.90×106 W/cm2, pulse duration 155 ns, repetition frequency 5 Hz was used to produce the oil micro trays with reproducible geometrical dimensions (diameter 70 µm to 100 µm, the depth lower than 20 µm, height of microburrs lower than 2 µm) and cubic spherical shapes.
