This paper presents the impact of a new electric motor design on the entire electric power train. As an example, the characteristics of a typical future battery electric vehicle are taken. The main intention of the new motor design is to considerably enhance the efficiency of the electric motor at low-load operation points, as these are the most relevant ones during typical driving cycles of a vehicle. It is shown that the efficiency at low-load can be improved by up to 10 percent points and even more. In addition, lower current level and lower torque ripple are gained. Using this new motor design for an electric power train of a prospective battery electric vehicle, the advantages are proved by driving cycle simulations. The economic and ecologic impact of this new electric drive is described in detail.
