Electrogalvanised steel is already in use for years and gives a well known benefit to the corrosion resistance of steel. Further on it features excellent forming and welding properties and is therefore a well established product in the automotive industry. For certain parts of the car the wish for higher corrosion resistance or reduction of secondary corrosion protection procedures occur. Fulfilling this demand the steel industry developed together with some lacquer producers so called corrosion protection primers. Corrosion protection primers are thin weldable, organic primers which are applied by coil coating at the steel manufacturer. These corrosion protection primers are in use for about 10 years and offer in case of the 1st Generation a three to four times and in case of 2nd Generation a six to eight times better corrosion protection than the comparable uncoated electrogalvanised steel. This excellent corrosion resistance also contributes to joining areas due to reduced creepage. Aside they give a benefit to the forming properties of the coated steel and allow widening the workspace during deep drawing. Due to the different coating composition and the further improved corrosion resistance the in-use 2nd Generation shows a lower electrode life time during spot welding. This drawback demanded further developments in the primer composition. The latest developments now combine the advantages of both generations and provide significant improvements in corrosion protection and weldability. These new lacquer systems already passed the laboratory state and were successfully applied in industrial scale on coil coating lines. The steel industry can now offer a new series of products which fulfil the demand of the auto motive industry for improved corrosion protection under retention of their common production processes.
