The paper describes an approach for hull assessment during the ship life cycle using 3D models to describe hull condition (HC model) and strength (FE model). The strength assessment of corroded hull structures is based presently on a comparison of measured and required thickness values. In some cases a longitudinal strength analysis is added, which is based on the computation of section moduli at the measured cross sections. Additional steps are required for a re-analysis of the structural strength with the help of an FE (Finite Element)model. Moreover 3D technology can support the inspection and thickness measurement process. For a more detailed analysis of remaining strength a combination of these technologies appears to be advantageous. This paper decribes the technologies for a transfer of measured thickness values between the inspection model and the FE model and for the determination of structural details for post-processing of the strength analysis. A solution has been presented which can be regarded as a pre-requisite for carrying out FE re-analysis in practise. The paper describes in detail the current assessment procedures, available 3D assessment models (finite element model, hull condition model), strength assessment based on combination of both models, assessment methods using FE-analysis (prepairing the Fe-model, using measured thickness values)and the transfer of data between diffent models (transfer of inspection results to the analysis model, identification of buckling fields, transfer of element stresses to elemenrtary buckling panels, numerical example of thickness mapping).
