In this paper drivers and trends of new drivetrains are presented. The power electronics is a key component of the many different electrified drivetrains currently under development. The requirements and main lifetime influencing criteria of these drivetrains are identified. The operating profiles of two representative vehicle concepts are examined to derive these criteria: the parallel hybrid and the battery electrical vehicle. With the assumption that thermomechanical stress of the semiconductors is lifecycle-determining; lifecycle estimates are calculated and evaluated. It is shown that drives with partial electric driving the load is determined by the operating strategy. This strategy acts only within the performance of the whole electric system. For the electric vehicle, the determining factors are the drive-cycle and the vehicle operators. Here it must be considered that the cycles are especially demanding on the power electronics. The standard deviation of the phase current was determined to be a good basis for the prediction of the lifetime.
