This paper is an interview of The Textile Journal with LCol Michel Prud'homme, Chief of Staff to Director Soldier Systems Program Management of the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). DND is combining forces with Industry Canada, the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries and Technopole Defence and Security in order to make a knowledge exchange possible and enhance Canada's capacity to develop technologies for future demands of its soldiers. The Technology Roadmap (TRM) initiative was driven by lessons learned in the planning of soldier system requirement sets with the goal of technology transition. During the development of the roadmap, industry's job is to give information about what is possible, to develop systems and provide the DND with them. More than 850 participants from across Canada, the United States and also international industry participants have been integrated in the process up to now. DND hopes that companies from power/energy, weaponry, sensors, textile will find synergies in developing overlapping systems of this roadmap. Concerning clothing development, fire retardant materials, better breathability, integral ballistic and bio-chemical protection, e-textiles or adaptive camouflage are issues to be considered as well as moisture management and heat dissipation, shock absorption, lateral and longitudinal stabilization in footwear development.
