The development of mobile x-ray backscattering imaging systems capable of imaging large areas in real time has resulted in application of the imaging technique for inspection of in-service aircraft. Large area inspections can now be conducted with real time assessments and the ability to direct recursive scans in areas of perceived defects to capture higher resolution images. The reduced exclusion zone afforded by the technique is accommodating to adjacent work in shop floor and flight ramp environments which decreases the impact that inspections have on aircraft production or flight operations schedules. The single-sided imaging technique has made radiography an efficient aircraft inspection method for highly congested areas and areas backed by radiation attenuating structure. The method has shown success in second layer and backside corrosion detection, FOD detection and moisture intrusion and is currently being tested for applications in second layer crack detection, composite inspection, and large scale configuration detection. The technique is currently limited for on-aircraft inspection in certain situations by the size of the required motion systems, and the limited availability of x-ray sources tailored to the method. Refinements provided by high resolution commercially available x-ray tubes and integration of miniaturized signal processing and data acquisition systems will contribute to efficiency gains and system form factor improvements.
