In the first half of the 20th century, when it first became possible to implement welded steel bridges, multiple instances of brittle failure of structural components was observed. Fractures mainly occurred in cases of mild stresses and low temperatures. Intensive research led to identification of the following major factors as low temperatures, large thicknesses, welding, tensile and/or internal stresses and structural changes. When choosing steel types, the aim is to exclude negative factors affecting the tendency to brittle fracture and thus to design secure and durable welded steel constructions.
