This paper has explained why it is beneficial to use Diesel engines with a power rating of not more than 55 kW whenever that is practical. There is great pressure on the designers of machines that currently use engines with power ratings slightly above this range to find power saving methods that will enable their machines to maintain the productivity of the system while downsizing the engine to 55 kW. This paper presented a series of power saving strategies that were demonstrated on a street sweeper machine which enabled the engine to accomplish as much work with the engine operating at a power level of 55 kW as was preciously accomplished at a power rating of 67 kW (a 18 % reduction in installed engine power). The power saving techniques fell into the categories of: efficient system architectures, efficient components, efficient circuits, and efficient control strategies. While no magic bullets were presented, this paper offers a series of example ideas which offer incremental power savings that in the sum make this engine downsizing possible. The reader is also warned that to assure a safe and reliable implementation of the systems described here, or any hydraulic system, it is necessary to consult a suitably qualified technical professional, such as an Applications Engineer at a reputable component supplier.
