The concept and all individual components of the 9HP automatic transmission were designed right from the start to achieve the fuel consumption and shift dynamic targets, with the lowest possible installation room requirements. The basic concept, consisting of 4 gear sets and 6 shift elements with 9 gearsteps, a spread near 10, and the use of the innovative dog clutch technology for power shifts, enables fuel consumption savings that were considered impossible up to now for a planetary automatic gear set in front-wheel drive arrangement. The reduction of the leakage in the hydraulic control unit and in the pressure regulator, as well as a driving strategy optimized for fuel consumption, also contribute substantially to reduction of fuel consumption. Through the design of all components of the control unit for short reaction and shift times, the very good values of the 8HP automatic transmission range could also be achieved for the 9HP transmission. The use of direct multiple shift systems leads to a further increase of the shift dynamics. Through the possibility of being able to vary both the shift points and the shift dynamics in one vehicle from an emphasis on comfort to very sporty, the performance of the vehicle can be affected according to the wishes of the driver. The control unit of the 9HP automatic transmission fulfills all requirements for function and flexibility of modern automatic transmissions and makes an important contribution to the desirability of automatic transmissions. With its high shift dynamics, the 9HP automatic trasnmission shows the potential that torque converter multi-ratio transmissions also possess in front-wheel drive layout with regard to sportiness, and can withstand the competition with other transmission systems. With its software structure, the electronic interfaces and a high-performance electronic control unit, the 9HP automatic transmission can also be functionally and electronically integrated in various vehicle concepts.
