With the presented implementation of the AWD (all-wheel drive) Disconnect System, ZF shows how a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions can be achieved while improving AWD performance at the same time. The strict disconnection of the AWD-driveline reduces fuel consumption almost to the level of vehicles with a single power-driven axle. Nevertheless, the AWD-driveline can be connected in a flash at any given moment, so as to ensure a strategy which provides the driver with excellent all-wheel functionality in all relevant situations. The presented design with synchronizer in the PTU (Power Take-Off) and additional dog clutches in the RDU (Rear Drive Unit) offers a nearly ideal Disconnect System. The simulation results and vehicle measurements show that the losses of standard all-wheel drive systems can be reduced by about 85 to 90 %. Depending on the reference driveline and operating strategy used for comparison, a savings potential between 2.5 and 4.7 % could be proven for the ZF AWD Disconnect System. The incurred additional expenses when compared with a conventional Hang-On AWD system are in an excellent cost-benefit ratio concerning the reduction of CO2 emissions and the increased AWD performance. In road tests, the system demonstrated its efficiency and was able to meet all defined development goals without compromise. The drag torque and fuel consumption measurements confirm that the specified reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved during customer-relevant vehicle operation. In addition, the added value of the Twin Clutch solution could be experienced in improved driving dynamics as well as in traction performance. Therefore, the ZF AWD Disconnect System can be seen as a contribution to an ecologically sustainable AWD vehicle concept.
