Limited oil reserves and the global CO2-emission situation are directed the automotive industry towards more fuel efficient vehicles. In this context it must be noted that the systems vehicle, driver and environment always interact with each other and that therefore all vehicle components have to be tuned holistically, considering the continuously interaction of the systems. Thereby, the in proportion partially contrary key aspects driving comfort and driveability must not be neglected, as the are often effected by the realized fuel reduction. The increasing complexity of modern vehicle concepts linked with the need to reduce development costs and time require new effective methods to integrate simulation and test on each level of the validation process; supporting the frontloading approach. This leads to the usage of operation systems like tools and methods for rating of comfort and driveability, binaural measuring equipment and 3D-Laser-Scanning-Vibrometer. Because many state-of-the-art operation systems for simulation, optimization and testing are only partially cross-linked, the enhanced modular X-in-the-loop Framework (XiL) was developed at IPEK - Institute of Product Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Thereby the open architecture allows the customized combination and application of different operation systems. As an example for the benefits of this tool chain, the development of an optimized gear shift strategy in terms of driving comfort, driveability and efficiency will be discussed.
