Many companies are looking for increased productivity from welding operations. By using novel and yet commercially available advances in welding technologies, productivity can be increased by a factor of two or more, reducing welding costs by, typically, 50%. Deep TIG offers a typical 50% reduction in welding costs through reduced joint volume, shorter welding time, lower distortion. Narrow groove welding can save 50-70% of weld volume and is economically attractive for joints as thin as 3/4-in. based on single bead per layer technique. Narrow groove tandem GMAW compared to standard GMAW achieved a higher deposition rate and lower heat input while maintaining quality, and reducing welding time by a factor of 3-5. One of the most promising of the newer and more innovative welding processes is the hybrid gas metal arc-laser beam welding process (GMAW-LBW), which can complete 5Gwelds, assure weld soundness, material properties, and an acceptable geometric profile. The combination of new lasers and pulsed gas metal arc welding (GMAW-P) power source technologies has led to important innovations in this hybrid process to increase travel speed for successful root pass welding. This allows for previously unheard of portability and power levels for use outside the laboratory and on the pipeline right-of-way.Hybrid GMAW-LBW offers potential for 5/8-in. (16 mm) single pass with a SECB joint or 5/8-in. root face on plain carbon steels, or high-speed root passes at 80 in./min on pipe of X80 and above.
