In this paper, we present a hard- and software platform for value-added logistics services, e.g. cargo monitoring, which integrates the existing telematics infrastructure of a GPS/GSM-based toll system. By reusing established system components, overall costs are reduced compared to proprietary solutions. Our extensible application platform allows to query sensor information on the status of goods in a trailer as well as data provided by a telematics bus, e.g. CAN. A Truck and Cargo Monitoring Electronic Control Unit (TCM ECU) manages the different telematics services in the truck, while a Cargo Bay Unit collects the sensor information in the trailer and communicates wirelessly with the TCM ECU. We describe the system components and show that the proposed platform comprises a high security level and supports reliable operations of all associated components.
