This paper presents the application of linear and nonlinear analyses to turning ability of a towing system in calm water. Coupled manoeuvring motion equations of tug and towed barge are considered in three degrees of freedom (surge, sway and yaw). Several towing parameters are varied in order to study their effect on the turning trajectories of the tug and the barge. A 2D lumped-mass method is applied to model the dynamic towline motion. This approach allows acquiring horizontal deflections of each towline segment and capturing any slack in the towline.
