Sandvik SAF 2507, UNS S32750 is a super duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel with a minimum Pitting Resistant Equivalent, PRE, of 42.5. It was originally developed for seawater cooling and is suited for service in highly corrosive environments, being characterized by excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, a high resistance to general corrosion, high resistance to corrosion fatigue, high mechanical strength, and physical properties that offer design advantages. In this article, the successful application of Sandvik SAF 2507 is shown in a number of applications through case studies. Since its introduction to the market in 1989 its applications have increased considerably due to its special corrosion and mechanical properties. Over the past two decades Sandvik has accumulated extensive experience with the use of Sandvik SAF 2507 in seawater related applications. For only the umbilical application Sandvik has supplied 70 000 km tubes since 1991. This grades' high resistance to localized corrosion as well as its ability to withstand HISC makes it a very interesting choice of material for equipment and systems in contact with or immersed in seawater. Results from lab testing as well as long term practical experience allowed fine adjustment in Sandvik SAF 2507 chemistry and metallurgy, which further expanding its recommended operational window. The grade has been used in contact with seawater in temperatures up to 65 deg C as well as in cathodically protected sub-sea infrastructures with potential as low as -1100 mVSCE. Sandvik SAF 2507 is a recommended grade for seawater cooled heat exchangers as well as topside, sub-sea and even downhole applications within the O&G segment.
