The application of the first SCR systems for passenger cars has shown the excellent deNO(x) potential of the SCR system as well as the limits of the application. One of the big challenges met during the development is the mixing of the injected urea solution (AdblueTM) into the gas and the transformation into ammonia, as well as the associated risk of solid deposition. New designs of the AdblueTM injection area has been developed in order to minimize the risk of urea deposits close to the AdblueTM injection valve. As a further improvement a compact design has been developed specifically to inject AdblueTM between a first monolith and a SCR monolith, both in the same canning. The CFD tools and methodologies for the optimisation are defined and the correlation level with real measurements has been established. This is used as to define guidelines and standardisation for current customers projects development. The associated development methodology is described, with the different calculation steps and experimental results. Finally the application scope of the different concepts is described, giving perspectives for further improvements of the exhaust aftertreatment system. Also a combination of the different systems can be used to cover specific applications. Additional constraints like injector maximum temperature, insulation needs, NVH, can also influence the choice towards one or the other solution.
