For best performance and emissions fulfillment, not only the optimized component itself is important, but the understanding of system interactions in the demanding environment of Euro 6 and Tier 4 Final engines. A new high pressure stage compressor wheel design is proposed by Pierburg Twin Turbo Systems (PTTS) for medium and heavy duty diesel engines. The new design allows the use of the high pressure stage over a broader range of engine operation area by increasing the efficiency in a way that makes the compressor useful at higher massflows, while also increasing performance at low massflows. The resulting higher overall compression efficiency is shown to decrease the exhaust work and allow the engine to be more flexible to meet different emissions strategies. Pierburg Twin Turbo Systems has proposed this new HPC wheel design for a two stage charging system that significantly increases the usable massflow and efficiency. The changes give the HPC the ability to share a greater percentage of the total compression work at higher massflow without loosing efficiency, while also increasing the low massflow efficiency, allowing the HPT nozzle area to be increased, reducing overall pumping work. The operation points have been optimized through minimization of isothermal compression work.
