A 25 kV superconducting transformer with Bi-2223 superconducting wires was designed and manufactured . The cryostat was made of FRP and liquid nitrogen used to cool the windings. The total weight is 1.71 t, excluding a refrigerator and compressor, which is almost equal to the design value. The maximum output maintaining the superconductivity was found to be approximately 3.5 MVA. It was possible to flow 750 A to the secondary winding, which corresponds to a total output of 4.0 MVA. An AC loss 7.9 kW at 4 MVA output and 6.2 kW at 3.5 MVA was calculated. The AC loss toward a practical use for weight reduction and higher efficiency should be reduced. Electric tests successfully carried out, which means the structure is suitable with regard to electric insulation. This work was funded by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation.
