In the present paper a 25kV superconducting traction transformer was developed to reduce the weight of a component for rolling stock. One benefit of the superconducting transformer is a potential for a higher efficiency. The prototype 25kV superconducting transformer was manufactured using Bi-2223 wire. Liquid nitrogen was used to cool windings. The total weight is 1.71 t excluding a refrigerator and compressor. From the test result, it is assumed the maximum output in superconductivity state was approx. 3.5MVA. At that time, a.c. loss was 6.2kW. Overload test were carried out corrensponds to 4.0MVA. A.c. loss was 7.9kW. The dielectric test was successfully passed.
