Nonwovens offer flexibility, low weight, sound absorption, improved aesthetics, cost efficiencies and eco-friendliness. That makes them ideal for automotive purposes. Nonwovens are used as interior or trunk carpets, underbody panels, as well as headliners, wheel well liners, dash panels or package trays. As the automotive industry is again growing, nonwovens industry has lot of possibilities to grow as well. Nonwovens producers make investment plans to ensure future prosperity. Textilgruppe Hof for example built a spunlace plant in Germany and continued to invest in spite of cuts because of the recession. Sandler Nonwovens has expansion plans as well. Hof offers needlepunch, chem bonded, thermal bonded, spunlace and static bonded nonwovens for all OEMs worldwide. Freudenberg Nonwovens is seeing an increasing part in automotive sector and therefore restarts a spunbond polyester production line that was idled in 2008 during the recession. Due to computer assisted simulation technology and production technologies, nonwovens offer cost efficiency and are thus gaining over wovens in a lot of applications. To meet the demands of OEMs, nonwovens companies are developing innovative products, such as a anti-skid pad from Texel, or flame retardancy fabrics like the spunlace nonwovens generation from Hof. A growing trend concerns using patterns and design in nonwoven headliners. Nonwovens are in cars often used as sound absorption products: Freudenberg's Evolon is an example for dashboards and side panels. Other trends are nonwovens as foam substitutes to meet for fogging standards, sustainably produced nonwovens or lightweight products.
