Outfitting is an important cost driver in the production of complex vessels, such as cruise ships, RoRo and naval ships. Outfitting costs can be divided into material cost and labour cost, in total the cost attributed to outfitting can reach up to 75 % in complex vessels. Structural weight is an important cost driver for the operational cost of the ship. Innovative structural solutions and lightweight materials are used increasingly in modern shipbuilding to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. However, lightweight components often increase the initial cost of a ship and cause problems in assembly and outfitting due to unconventional materials which are difficult to handle in shipyards. Lightweight structures are therefore often being prefabricated in a modular way, allowing easy integration into the conventional ship structures. The cost of lightweight structures as well as the production lead time can be further reduced, if modular lightweight components include outfitting functionalities, such as insulation, piping and cabling, foundations etc. Lightweight modules with integrated functionalities and easy-to-assemble joints have been developed in the European DE-LIGHT Transport and other projects. Those components are lightweight, reduce the number of parts, standardized and highly pre-fabricated, allowing for an economy of scale while maintaining the flexibility to cope with specific functional and customer requirements. The use of those modules helps to transfer work from the final assembly stages of the ship into specialized workshops and thus to reduce production and refitting lead time. Based on Best Practice Handbooks and catalogues elaborated in European research projects the paper will present design solutions as well as production and assembly aspects of integrated multifunctional lightweight modules including joints and integrated outfitting. Moreover, the paper will demonstrate how those modules can be used in selected applications and will assess the benefits of those solutions in the entire Life Cycle of a ship.
