This paper shows an easy way of hybridising a conventional passenger car by the use of an additional hydraulic system. As an analogy to electrical hybrids, new and even older non-hybrid vehicles could be hydraulically hybridised without much effort due to the high power density and the compact construction of hydraulic systems. The combustion engine is supported under peak load conditions, aiming to enhance accelerating ability and to reduce fuel consumption. An overview about how easy hydraulic components can be installed in conventional drive train concepts will be given in this article. The IFASter - the used test vehicle - demonstrates the amount of work that is needed to add a hydrostatic motor/pump unit and a double piston accumulator to the mechanical drive train. Advantages of this hydraulic system are the abilities to provide additional power during acceleration, to recharge the accumulator when the car is idling, to recuperate energy during braking or if the engine runs in inappropriate operating points, and to operate the combustion engine in a start-stop mode.
